When the Water Jug Shook-

English 원문
Drops tapped from the ceiling pipe, but the washing machine drum lay silent on its metal feet. Troy had lugged a basket of damp clothes down the stairwell, each step echoing through concrete. A striped cat watched from the mailbox area, ears twitching at each hollow clang. Water remained scarce, so he had filled a plastic jug at his kitchen sink before the flow weakened. He pushed the laundry room door; the hinge groaned and released a stale chorus from dryer vents. A warning label had been scraped off, leaving glue that crackled under fluorescence. The quiet here was strangely uncommon; machines usually sang like untrained brass. Every breath now banged louder than any absent spin cycle, a small paradox. Troy set the jug on a narrow shelf, loaded the washer, and tapped the start pad. Intuition warned the shelf looked too narrow, yet he still closed the detergent box.
A bass hum rolled through the room, and thin panels rattled against hidden screws. The shelf shivered, the jug edged forward, and its base bumped a leaning broom. Wooden bristles scraped over tiles, knocking a wire cart whose wheels squealed across the floor. The cart kissed a stainless dish; the dish rang like spoons clanging inside a pot. Startled, the striped cat sprang toward a folding rack, which swung wide and clipped the jug again. Milky water sloshed across the washer lid and hissed through side vents into the drain grate. Troy jerked the cord free; the drum slowed in rough pulses as distant doors thudded above. He wedged the jug beneath the shelf, trapping it, while suds crawled outward in uneven rings.
Foam gathered around Troy’s ankles and lapped at the cat’s paws, but the animal only sniffed and backed away. He splashed to a mop hanging behind the corridor door and shook its handle loose. With steady, deliberate strokes he steered the suds back toward the grate. Bright bubbles popped one after another, producing a soft chorus under the roof’s continuing drip. Drops that had tapped earlier now drummed faster against the slowing steel, tracing restless circles toward the drain.
