Rainwater pinged against the tin roof vent, leaving a tiny echo between low walls. Sara pushed open the stairwell door. She stepped onto the flat surface, a small bucket rocking in her hand. Oscar followed, balancing three half-used cans of bright paint left after the street festival. Warm afternoon light mixed with the smell of damp concrete around their shoes. Without speaking, they knelt beside a wide puddle that still clung to the tiles. Sara tipped one can. Thick blue paint oozed, met the clear water, and spread in slow ribbons. Tiny currents carried the colour toward the corner drain, swirling like clouds in a glass jar. Oscar poured a thinner stream of yellow from higher up. Droplets struck the surface and burst into delicate bubbles that drifted outward.

The colours touched and formed green streaks, then the flow thinned. Viscosity slowed their dance. Sara dipped a cracked spoon and stirred once. The motion changed the pressure. Fresh spirals slid toward a planter box where last weekend’s salad seedlings stood in neat rows. The liquid crawled, but a raised tile blocked part of the path. She moved to the other side and poured again from a sharper angle. A hidden plastic elephant, forgotten since a family gathering months ago, slid free from under the box as the coloured mix seeped beneath it. Oscar laughed without a sound. He scooped a palmful of red and let it drip across the animal’s back in dotted trails. Their separate streams merged, overflowed the raised tile, and painted a twisting map across the rooftop floor. Wind skimmed the wet pattern and nudged the tiny elephant forward between their two bright handprints.

色どうしが触れ合い、緑の筋をつくったあと流れは細くなった。粘度がその動きを遅くした。サラはひびの入ったスプーンを浸し、一度だけかき混ぜた。その動きで圧力が変わり、新しい渦が先週末のサラダ用の苗が整列するプランターへ滑っていった。液体はにじみ進んだが、盛り上がったタイルが道をふさいだ。彼女は反対側に移り、より鋭い角度から再び注いだ。数か月前の家族の集まりで忘れられていた小さなプラスチックのゾウが、色の混合液が下にもぐり込むと同時に箱の下からするりと姿を現した。オスカーは声を出さずに笑った。彼は赤いペンキを手にすくい、点々とした筋を動物の背に滴らせた。二人の別々の流れが合流し、盛り上がったタイルを越えて屋上の床に曲がりくねった地図を描いた。風が濡れた模様をかすめ、小さなゾウを二人の明るい手形の間へと押し進めた。
