"That metal lid hums loudly this afternoon, Patch." Jasper flipped the metal lid of the empty washer. A low resonance rolled through the laundry room, and Patch’s floppy ears flicked. Vibrations traveled up a nearby ironing board; loose spoons on it rattled hard. The basin wobbled, struck a stack of wooden pegs, and several pegs jumped across tiles. One peg bumped the laundry cart wheel and set the cart rolling toward the doorway. Its small wheels produced a rising whirr that echoed against walls lined with hanging shirts. Outside the doorway, a sunlit courtyard waited as the cart slowed under a trailing sheet.

Jasper laughed once and tapped the washer lid again, using a stronger hand. This second thump shook a loose relay inside an old dryer beside him; the metal piece rang sharply. The new ring met the fading echo and together they formed a pulsing beat overhead. Clothespins hanging from the line swayed, shifting long wires that passed near a waiting shelf. A rolled magazine crawled forward, lost balance, dropped, and slapped the metal cart handle hard. The cart lurched backward, splashing a narrow puddle left by a freshly wrung towel. Brows lifting, Jasper placed his closed laptop on the vibrating washer, and the plastic casing buzzed loudly. Its thin rubber feet drifted toward the edge until he caught the device and slid it aside. He folded a damp towel into a compact square on the table. Water from its corner kept tapping the tiles, counting time in uneven rhythm.
