A lone neon tube above the folding table buzzed, throwing narrow white bands across wet tile. Pia, an artist who liked bright cloth patterns, stood beside an open box of washing powder while a gray cat crouched on the outer rim of a metal tub.

She tipped a plastic scoop. Powder poured onto an upside-down lid, formed a small mound, then slipped off the plastic lip. The trickle struck a line of wooden clothespins; they rolled, tapped a pair of scissors, and the blades snapped shut on nothing. The cat’s ears twitched at the dry clap. Pia gave a regretful half-laugh and flicked more grains. During this interim shower, stray flakes drifted onto yesterday’s pile and thickened its slope. She grabbed a jar of fine salt from a shelf, let its crystals sift through her fingers, and the heavier grains pushed earlier soap outward, spreading a pale fan over the drain grooves.

Curiosity rose. She scooped blue starch beads next. They rattled across the growing mix, bounced against the salt edge, and a fresh chain began. The combined weight nudged the lid itself; it tilted farther, releasing every leftover speck caught under its rim. Powder, salt, and beads cascaded together, slid beneath the tub, and met yesterday’s thin chalk dust so that a soft cloud puffed around the cat’s paws. Whiskers quivered, yet the animal stayed anchored, eyes following each shifting grain. Detergent still trickled from the tilted scoop. The cat’s tail flicked once above the mottled floor.
