A buzzing ceiling bulb above the storeroom doorway flickered. Uneven stripes crawled over cartons stacked along the narrow aisle. Cool air hummed out of an old vent, mixing with a faint oil smell from the lift. Vance rolled a metal cart through the loading door. Ada, the senior librarian, guided the rear wheel with her boot. Glass jars filled with dried kelp rattled softly inside a wooden crate. Soap water from the janitor’s mop left a damp patch ahead. The cart coasted onto the wet concrete and slid sideways. One corner struck a pile of magazines, sending covers flapping. Ada planted an elbow against the frame and halted the drift. She crouched, her movements patient, and stacked the loose magazines again.

Vance tried to remember whether the cart brake still worked. He twisted the front wheels toward the aisle between two cabinets. A measured shove carried the cart past the slippery zone. Dry concrete increased friction, yet the jars now pressed forward. Metal rims clanged, and the sound bounced under the low ceiling. A clipboard slid from the shelf edge and clattered against their shoes. A raised floor strip blocked the final meter to the target shelf. Ada slid a flattened carton under the wheels, lowering the step. Together they leaned forward and urged the cart upward. Glass knocked against glass, then stilled without cracking. The back wheels thumped over the strip and stopped mid-turn. Near his boot, the glossy pages shifted in a slow ripple.
