The metal scoop felt hot against Joel’s palm, and a thin film of warm moisture clung to its curved side. Straw brushed his ankles while he stepped between hens that scratched over the dusty floor.

He planned to finish counting eggs before the market truck arrived, so the two-o’clock deadline sat in his mind like a ticking bell. Noon sunlight pushed through a finger-wide crack in the tin roof, struck the nesting boxes, and began to heat the fresh shells. A low dispute broke out between two red hens under the perch bar; feathers puffed, then drifted away in the rising air. Grain dust floated in the brightness, and a dry smell of hay blended with the steady cluck of the birds. Joel studied the scene and spotted an old burlap feed pouch hanging on a nail near the fence. He lifted it, found one damp corner, and draped the fabric across the crack to block the beam.

Warmth still slipped around its edges, yet the eggs cooled enough for safe handling. He squeezed through a narrow gap beside the water trough and continued his round, sliding each pale oval into a wooden tray. Steam rolled up when the damp corner of the burlap met the hot tin; the patch dried, darkened, and fine fibers split open. Sunlight spilt through the new holes and sprinkled bright dots onto the straw below. Dust fell also, landing on one egg and leaving a tiny gray ring—an unexpected souvenir of the shield’s slow wear. Ivy outside the mesh fence rustled as a light breeze passed, but the heat inside stayed heavy.

Joel collected the final egg and brushed away the dust ring. He placed the loaded tray on a low shelf near the gate.
