Cal pressed one boot against the lower rung of the rope ladder and hauled a wooden crate toward the treehouse door. The crate held his latest prize: a bright brass trophy rescued from a street market. Above, the platform rocked whenever a breeze nudged the upper branches, so every tug made the planks tremble and the crate sway.

Inside, he slid the trophy onto a narrow shelf that already leaned outward. A far corner of the room showed daylight through a gap, and the slope sent loose marbles drifting toward the rail. Warm sunlight touched the rough pine boards while a chill scent of sap mixed with the dry rustle of leaves, giving the small space a sharp, mint-like edge. Beyond the window, a distant marsh glittered silver, and a feral cat below answered a passing jay with a sudden yowl. Cal braced his feet wider, copying the wide stance he had seen in photos of an engineer balancing heavy beams. Still, the shelf trembled. He folded a thin wedge of cork under one bracket, then tucked two flat stones under the other end. The tilt eased, yet the weight of the trophy drew the plank forward again. He peeled off his canvas belt, threaded it around the back post, and tightened the buckle against the shelf edge. The belt held, but its tension pulled a second bracket loose, and the plank tipped like a seesaw. The unexpected jolt sent the brass cup sliding; it tapped a glass jar, and both objects crawled toward the open doorway. Cal lunged, hooked the crate under the lower edge, and propped the shelf a final time with his shoulder.

The plank still quivers under the uneven load. Beside the belt, the jar inches forward, and a thin shadow widens across the floor.

板はまだ不均等な荷重で震えている。ベルトの脇で瓶が少しずつ前へ進み、床に細い影が広がっている。
