Ivy finally reached the market near the river at noon. She wanted grilled eel skewers from a bright street vendor. Many locals called this lively time skewers afternoon. A narrow floating bridge linked her side to the stalls. Each small wave lifted the planks, then dropped them again. The gap opened, closed, and opened in steady rhythm. Ivy waited and counted the rises while boats drifted by. Five breaths, boards up; five breaths, boards flat.
Gentle sun warmed the wooden posts near her shoes. Her basket tapped her knee softly. On the next flat moment, she stepped onto the bridge.
