The swing seats drifted forward and back, but one chain stayed taut under the weight of a forgotten backpack. Joy bent her knees to keep balance on the rubber ground, the stack of bright dishware pressing against her ribs while a foam cushion swung from her elbow. She had planned a small picnic near the bench, yet every step toward the sandbox sent grains rolling under her shoes. Reaching the slide platform, she paused at the threshold where metal met smooth plastic and dropped the cushion for a moment’s relief. Above, a branch released late-season blossom petals that skittered across the slick surface like tiny skates.

A breeze pushed the cushion; the soft square skimmed down the slide, gathered speed, and rammed a plastic bucket resting at the bottom. The bucket toppled, spilling damp sand that raced in a narrow stream. The moving sand struck a child’s clear prism toy, and the prism tipped, flashing sliced rainbows onto the bench leg where Joy had balanced the dishware minutes earlier. Plates wobbled. Cups clinked. Joy lunged, calf muscles tightening as she braced one hand against the bench. Her fingers caught the outer plate before it could spin away, absorbing its sideways momentum. The cascade reached its limit; the bucket lay sideways, the prism rocked once more, and the dishware steadied in her grip while loose sand settled around her sneakers. She exhaled, then brushed stray petals from the cushion and set everything onto the grass, farther from sliding surfaces.

At the water fountain nearby, a grey pigeon dipped its head, then sprang upward, wingbeats angling it over the sandbox rim toward the climbing bars.
