English 원문
A faint crease had already formed on the last checkout slip when Mae slid between the silver stacks. The carpet along the aisle showed dim blue stripes, and cool fluorescent light washed the spines. Beside her, Ben traced call numbers across a steel-grey shelf, both knees brushing the fringe of the reading table behind them. Closing time crept closer; the furnace vent sighed out soft pale air. An overhead skylight reflected a steel glow, and distant page-turning produced a faint rustle across the aisles. They searched for a gardening guide that compared jasmine roots in clay soil to squash vines needing loam. Each minute, the soft hum of the return belt marked their dwindling chance.
Mae located the correct row and carefully stepped onto a low stool. A forgotten acorn inside her jacket pocket slipped free and bounced off the stool’s rim. It struck a stack of laminated maps resting on the reading table. The maps slid, edge first, against a glass paperweight; the sphere rolled like a moonstone and nudged a column of periodicals. That narrow tower toppled onto the return cart, its wheels turning toward the checkout counter. Pages fluttered in cool currents, echoing the characters’ plight to keep order. Ben lunged, arms wide, but his sleeve knocked a display stand, sending pamphlets gliding down the polished surface.
The cart drifted faster beside the aisle, its metal parts whirring like distant insects. Ben planted one boot against a wheel; rubber met carpet and the motion slowed until the frame leaned against his shin. Mae climbed down, grasped the guide at last, and slid it under her arm; dust rose in a thin, frost-white ribbon. Overhead, the ventilation fan spun unchanged, indifferent to the tidy scene below. At the checkout counter, a volunteer straightened her badge and wheeled the clock’s protective cover shut. The pendulum inside kept swinging in slow arcs toward the blue carpeted floor.
