"The box keeps tipping!"
Cruz lunged forward, steadying the cardboard on the flour-dusty form desk. A medicinal whiff drifted from the tape dispenser, mixing with the sweet sting of stamp adhesive that floated over the waiting area. He had double-taped every seam, yet the package still rocked like bread dough under a fast pulse of footsteps. Around him, an ensemble of wool coats breathed out damp wool and peppery after-rain smell while number tickets beeped in steady rhythm. Assertiveness hovered among the vinegar-sharp odors; each customer guarded scented parcels of soap, coffee, or citrus candies. Cruz tried to choreograph his path between umbrellas and padded envelopes, aiming for the humming scale beside the counter window.
The scale’s screen blinked crimson when the parcel landed, the metallic tang of warm electronics rising with the signal. Overweight. He slid the lid open and removed a jar of syrupy jam whose sugary aroma coated his tongue. The jar rolled, tapped a stack of rubber bands, and the top band sprang free. It bounced off the form desk, flicked against a chalky envelope, and sent the envelope gliding along a ribbon of spilled ink. The shipping label had been smudged by damp fingers earlier, and now the envelope nudged a plastic cup of pens. One pen toppled, releasing a burst of chemical blue scent as the nib scratched the ticket dispenser’s tray.
Ink spread in a thin river, but the chain slowed when a clerk’s paperweight—cool metal with a dusty leather smell—landed beside the cup and stopped its sway. A quick laugh rippled through the line; solidarity drifted over the peppermint air of patiently sucked mints. Cruz scooped the jam back, this time padding the jar with crumpled pages that carried a chalky printer smell. The box rocked once, then balanced. A lone rubber band twirled beneath the package scale toward the drain slot.
