The ticket screen glowed amber, but Wade’s number card stayed still against his palm. He had arrived just after dawn, carrying a shoebox wrapped in honey-colored paper and secured with wide tape. A mural had been painted across the back wall: copper clouds drifted above a figure lost in reverie beside an enormous mailbox. Near the doorway, a clear jar collected coins that strangers dropped—quiet evidence of generosity catching the light. At the form-filling desk he brushed a loose rubber band aside. Beside the pens, a single stamp showing a bright green sprout waited for any envelope that passed.
At Window Two, Wade placed the shoebox on the bronze package scale. The screen flashed red: overweight. He peeled away the tape vigorously, feeling warmth grow where adhesive stretched. The lid sprang free and a stainless travel mug slid out. A glass jar of peach jam followed, rolled off the edge, and struck a stack of empty mailing tubes. The tubes toppled like short pillars; the top tube clipped the ticket dispenser by the queue. Plastic nudged metal, and a ribbon of numbered slips spun loose, unrolling across the ochre tiles toward waiting shoes.
The clerk blinked once, then reached beneath the counter. A wooden ruler swept along the floor, stopping the paper tide before it reached a scatter of packing beads. Wade trimmed a layer of bubble wrap from the mug, retaped the box, and set it back on the scale; the display turned green. The tubes, lighter than they looked, lay scattered but unbroken, and another staff member nudged them into a neat row with a foot. Wade offered a quick thanks, tucked the receipt into his pocket, and stepped aside. A girl in a sunflower jacket darted after a drifting ticket; her sleeve stirred the warm air and the thin slip glided onward through the half-open doors.
