English 원문
The plastic cradle beneath the number dispenser displayed only a bare scrape of gray instead of tickets. A pale moth bobbed against the rim, its powdery wings tapping the smooth surface. Clara leaned in and pressed her thumb along the slot. The edge felt cool and slightly oily, yet no paper slid forward. She lifted the dispenser, found that a folded packet had jammed behind the spring, and shook it gently. Three wrinkled slips fluttered out, brushing her knuckles before drifting to the floor. Moments later, the small green light on the machine finally blinked softly. Clara stooped, gathered one slip, and its dry corner rasped against her palm.
She had carried a rough, palm-sized stone in her coat pocket since breakfast. While the number board advanced slowly, she turned the stone over, studying the chalky skin. Faint dust clung to her fingertips, and the tiny pits along the surface scratched her nails. Outside, a street violinist tried to serenade the lunchtime crowd, and distant notes seeped through the automatic doors. When her number glowed, she stepped to the package counter and set a small box on the scale. The clerk tapped the screen, and the device began to weigh the parcel, but the pointer paused above the allowed mark. Clara loosened the flaps, removed a coil of bubble wrap, and tried again. The reading still hovered too high, and her assumption about the stone’s modest weight bent under the bright digits.
Refusing to abandon the attempt, she slid the stone from the box and bumped its edge against the metal counter. A hairline crack opened, and a glossy flake popped free to reveal a glittering cavity. The ordinary stone was a geode, crystals clustered like tiny rooftops inside a hollow shell. She pinched the loose fragments, their edges sharp yet strangely slick, and dropped them into a waste cup. With the shards gone, the box now felt lighter against her palms. She closed the flaps and guided it back onto the scale, watching the pointer dip below the line. Clara pocketed the remaining half and walked toward the sliding doors outside. Behind her, the dispenser advanced a fresh loop of paper that waved in the conditioned air.
