English 원문
"Push the box forward."
Lyra edged the small wooden casket along the counter, and a hermit crab skittered under the ticket machine. The creature produced a quick staccato scrape that bounced off metal chairs and blended with the steady ping of number tickets. Rubber soles shuffled, wrappers crumpled, and the low buzz of fluorescent tubes merged into one rippling curtain of sound. Hector crouched; his backpack rattled as he moved, yet the crab slipped between chair legs, leaving only tiny shell taps on the vinyl floor. A clerk’s bell chimed from the window row, then silence widened before the next electronic ding. Lyra steadied the parcel on the humming scale table while paper envelopes rustled against one another behind her.
The digital scale gave a flat tone, deeper than the ticket beeps, and red digits glowed two grams over the limit. The parcel had been wrapped twice in tape, so each pull of adhesive still whispered along the cardboard edges. Hector loosened a strip, and the flap sighed open, revealing bubble cushions, a folded map painted with a green lagoon, and a model raft carved from cork. Repacking shifted the weight, yet the scale droned the same warning pitch. Outside the glass doors, distant traffic murmured like slow surf curling around a cove. Lyra removed the map, slid it into her pocket, and tried again; the scale answered with another unwavering tone that seemed to vibrate through her elbows.
Hector’s gaze drifted to the ticket machine. The crab lay motionless beside it, and a faint ticking leaked from its jointed legs. He lifted the shell; hinges creaked, and a hidden wind-up key quivered inside. The toy crab, not a living wanderer, had probably fallen from someone’s child-size jacket. Lyra slipped the clockwork creature into the casket, its metal legs clinking softly against the cork raft. She pressed the lid down, the wood muffling the tiny ticks, then slid the box onto the form-filling desk.
