A faint buzz rolled from the ceiling lights, broken every few seconds by the sharp tap of a ticket dispenser beside the reception desk. Rubber soles shifted on the linoleum; each step left a short squeak that blended with distant chatter from the hallway. Beneath the benches, the floor bore scuff marks yet showed quiet resilience against the daily shuffle of shoes.

Ruby balanced a paper envelope of dried mugwort on her knee while comparing her half-finished form with the example sheet. The dispenser spat out a new ticket out of order, so she rose early and took a cautious stride toward the pharmacy window. Moisture from a recent mop pass lingered; her heel slipped, and she stumbled forward. Her elbow clipped a plastic cup on the counter. Water hopped over the rim, splashed across the surface, then streamed down the power cable of the glowing number board. The board flickered twice, digits scrambled, and an impatient wave of shoulders turned toward the soundless screen. She caught her balance, knees tingling from the sudden stretch, and whispered apology. No one heard over the accelerating confusion.

The water thinned as it travelled, but it still reached the socket. Sparks never formed; instead, the screen dimmed to gray. A nurse hurried over, lifted the dripping cable, and looped it onto a hook high above the flow, cutting the cascade. Ruby’s pulse still hammered; she exclaimed "Oh!" only after the danger had eased. Tissue packets stuck to her damp fingers as she dabbed the counter, yet the remaining film of water slid beneath the partition, out of sight. The dispenser resumed, printing tickets in proper order again, and Ruby returned to her seat to finish the missing lines on her form. A fragment of mugwort drifted with the shallow stream toward the darkened hallway corner.
