Fine grains of sand pressed against Nora's palm as she traced a shallow channel through the sandbox. The groove curved between two damp mounds, forming a miniature gorge where toy cars could cruise. Beside her, a short-haired terrier pawed at the loose sand, hind legs braced and chest low. Each rapid dig sprayed grit onto Nora's shoes until the dog paused, nose buried inside its fresh burrow. Nora straightened, shoulders loosening, and glanced toward the swing set at the far edge of the playground. Both seats rocked under the weight of older children, their feet pumping hard enough to stretch the chains. She had waited all morning, yet every approach ended with the same cramped queue. A painted turtle on the path, part of an environmental awareness mural, reflected the sun without helping her pass the time.

Minutes later, Nora lifted a yellow pail and knelt by a shallow puddle near the climbing frame. One small drop in the bucket landed from the overhanging bar and sent thin rings across the surface. The terrier barked once, startled by the trembling water, then dashed toward the swing set again. Two riders slowed, thighs stiff from long pumping, and dragged their sneakers to the mat. Nora advanced, soles bending on the springy surface, but a wandering toddler stepped in front of her. The terrier slipped around the child, nudged one empty swing sideways, and opened just enough space for Nora.

She gripped the chains, calves tightening, and noticed the metal seat had been polished smooth by countless shoes. Air brushed the backs of her knees as she kicked forward gently. Rain arrived as a fine mist, tapping against metal bars and helmeting her short hair with cool beads. Children hurried toward the climbing structure while the terrier remained, an oddly altruistic guard circling beneath her flight. She let her legs slow until the seat hovered low, and a narrow stream slipped from the pail, darkening the sand beside the rubber mat. A faint puddle widened under the moving seat.
