Lyra gripped the steel-grey paddle and drove her shoulder forward. The rye braid sat on its parchment like a small raft, trembling as the oven’s pale fire rolled under it. Heat pressed against her cheek, yet the middle shelf stayed just beyond reach. A sputter of thick chocolate burst from an overfilled cruffin on the upper rack; the glossy stream crawled across the stone like slow lava, spreading a blackened glaze over the path she needed. Tiny bubbles rose and burst inside the rye dough, quiet signs of renewal even while danger crept closer.

She had expected only routine timing, but the chocolate spill turned every movement into contention for safe space. Ned, a visiting naturalist sketching bird tracks on his notepad near the window, edged away as smoke ribboned toward him. Lyra bent her knees, shortened her grip, and slid the paddle in at a lower angle. Brick flakes scraped the wood; the loaf shuddered yet refused to budge. A hairline crack along its crust offered eerie foreshadowing of collapse. She exhaled, shifted to the cooler side tiles, and tried again. This time the parchment folded just enough; the braid glided over the sticky river and landed on a cleaner corner. Steam veiled the loaf, then drifted upward where ceiling vents caught the haze.

Hours later, long after the front lights had been dimmed, the bakery showed daytime traces frozen in cooler tones. By evening, the silver paddle leaned against the blue-grey wall, streaked with chocolate that had dried to a dull bark. The rye braid sat on the wire rack, one side darker where the spill had scorched it. Fluorescent glare washed across the empty floor, and a pale stripe of flour lay untouched beside the stone base.
