English 원문
Sprinklers hissed along the visitor pathway, but the shallow pond beside them stayed stubbornly low. Hazel leaned over the wooden railing, calf muscles stretching as she searched the shaded platform where the red panda usually lounged. Her companion, Rafe, balanced on the balls of his feet beside a map kiosk whose faded surface showed the wear of many seasons. Short bursts of mist drifted from slim nozzles, part of ongoing water conservation across the zoo. A staff cart rattled past, each metal tray carrying an offering of sliced pear for the later feeding show. Hazel set her reusable bottle on the kiosk’s velvety fiberglass edge and shifted her weight toward the binocular stand.
The bottle wobbled, tipped, and rolled off the ledge. It struck the pavement, its cap half-closed, and a ribbon of water spread downhill. The flow slid across sun-warmed concrete, found an old mortar groove between stones, and gained speed. Rafe stepped back, knees bending to keep balance as the stream curved toward a stack of folded pamphlets left near a bench. Pages softened at once; soggy corners peeled away and drifted like pale petals until they lodged against a narrow drain. Pressure built behind the paper dam, raising a shallow pool that lapped at Hazel’s sneakers. She crouched, fingertips brushing the cool surface while her shoulders tightened from the crouch.
A groundskeeper heard the splash and strode over, boots pressing the path with solid rhythm. He knelt, forearms straining, and lifted the grate. The trapped pamphlets slid free and folded in on themselves. Water swirled into the pipe, revealing the jagged edge of a cracked paving stone that the puddle had washed clean of dust. Hazel straightened, quadriceps fluttering after the squatting pause, while the keeper replaced the grate and nudged a rubber wedge against it to prevent fresh debris from drifting in. A thin stream kept circling the lifted grate and dripping into the dark pipe below.
