English 원문
A pale rectangle of clean dust lay on the side table beside the reception desk, as though a box had been lifted and carried away too quickly. Zara bent over the mark, the sterile tang of surface spray mixing with a dry paper smell that rose from the exposed wood grain; a thin groove, darker and sticky, curved like a footprint along the table’s edge. Her cousin Ian, already holding two half-filled forms, sniffed and wrinkled his nose. The waiting room air was crowded with peppermint antiseptic, warmed plastic from yellow chairs, and a faint fried-onion aroma drifting through the sliding door to the parking lot.
Their numbers had been called out of order, so the pair drifted toward the wall of chairs to pass the time. Zara ran her finger along the groove, expecting loose varnish; instead a sweet, medicinal crust clung to her skin. The discovery gave the trace a new category: not a scratch, but dried cough syrup. They pulled the nearest chair aside. Its hard cushion released a puff that tasted of old vinyl and lemon cleaner, yet no missing tissue box waited underneath. Ian admired the merit of lighter furnishing as he struggled to shift the heavy seat. When a boy sneezed nearby, Zara spoke of bringing him a sheet once the box appeared; their special bond showed in how quickly Ian nodded and kept searching without a word.
A muffled announcement rolled down the hallway, and the floor vibrated through the building’s concrete foundation. Zara tilted the entire table toward the fluorescent light. Underneath, a small cardboard cube stuck to the syrup trail loosened, then slid free. She guided it into Ian’s open palm; the printed number on its side had been blurred, yet the tissues inside still smelled of fresh starch. Zara stepped through the glass door toward the child, and behind her the ceiling fan kept turning above the empty groove.
