“Did a bird wander in here?” Paul kept his voice low, yet several heads lifted. A quick shadow slipped along the blue-grey floor tiles beneath the waiting-room chairs. From a distance its paper-thin wings suggested a sparrow chick, though its colour matched the frost-white walls. Paul crouched, palm hovering above the chilly linoleum, and the shape twitched as if breathing. Children in school jackets began to huddle at the edge of the scene, shoes squeaking against the smooth surface. The number screen blinked through appointments, ignoring the stir while a faint sprinkling of rain tapped the glass doors near the parking-lot edge.

Curiosity drew the small crowd closer; they tried to gather around without blocking the corridor that led to the pharmacy window. When Paul slid a receipt beneath the creature, the object rocked and flipped. A sharp crease flashed; feathers became corners; the bird revealed itself as an origami crane, damp at the tips where rainwater had drifted across the floor. Laughter rippled, then faded as the queue display jumped from forty-two to forty-five. Paul’s own paper ticket showed forty-three. Stewardship of the fragile crane now fell to him, yet the skipped call pressed against his ribs. He lifted the folded bird, but a draught from an opening door pushed it against his sleeve, smearing pale ink across the wings.

Paul moved to the form-filling alcove. The damp ticket had been printed earlier by the machine; blurred digits forced another attempt. He straightened, wiped moisture from the plastic button, and pressed it again. Nothing. The screen flickered, then produced a fresh slip—number fifty-one, even farther back. Breath clouded near his lips while he balanced the crane inside an empty brochure rack, its neck tilting toward the fluorescent ceiling. A new idea glimmered: exchange numbers with the next child, who still studied the silent bird. Paul turned, wrist tight around the soft paper, and was reaching for the child’s still-unused ticket.
