Four pale rectangles of morning glare had already crept across the marble floor when Dina reached the first exhibition hall. Overhead spots glimmered against polished glass, throwing a shifting lattice of shadow over a carved mask that belonged to an old harvest ceremony. Grant paused beside her, his notebook reflecting a narrow beam that danced across the case. Conservation work had preserved the fragile wood, so the ridges still caught every flicker of light. Dina wanted to sketch those ridges before the hall grew busier; her pencil hovered, but reflected ceiling panels kept sliding across her view. She shifted left, yet another shaft of brightness met her eyes and erased the finer cuts she tried to follow.
Down the corridor between wings, a whisper of darker air suggested fewer skylights, so she drifted there for a clearer angle. The mask’s surface dimmed in that direction, but a tour group drifted forward, their silhouettes blotting the exhibit entirely. Dina crouched to peer below an elbow; Grant leaned sideways, trying to convey a detail about village tradition he had just copied. Footsteps echoed, and overhead lamps blinked once, then steadied, leaving the glass humming with reflected glare again. She adjusted posture a second time, kneeling until the marble’s chill pressed through her jeans, yet a final strip of brightness sliced across the case and splintered her outline of the jaw.
An unexpected ripple of wing-shadow cut through the hall; a stray pigeon had slipped past the revolving door and now fluttered along the ceiling track. Children gasped, backs arched, and the tour group parted to watch the bird’s looping path. In that brief clearing, no body blocked the mask and no glare struck the glass. Dina straightened, traced the revealed corner quickly, while Grant’s page filled with fresh knowledge about the pigments that still gleamed. The pigeon wheeled once more, its broad silhouette gliding over spotlights, and a faint wing-beat echoed high above.
