Tiv the field mouse woke under a tilted wooden plank.

Yellowish light filled the dusty shed.

He sniffed and heard slow drops fall into a stone basin.

Cool water moved below, so he moved toward it.

A rusty bucket blocked the narrow path beside the basin.

He pushed the rim, but the metal scraped and stayed firm.

The push shook loose chalky limestone dust from the wall behind.

Dust fell onto the bucket, making it slide toward the basin.

Water splashed out, darkening the yellowish floorboards near Tiv.

The sudden splash covered his eyes and blurred the scene.

He shut his eyes and let his whiskers guide forward.

The whiskers touched moving water and traced a safe edge.

Using tiny steps, he reached the basin lip without vision.

He lowered his head and drank while droplets kept ticking around.

He paused to breathe, chest rising beneath soft fur.

The bucket bumped against the wall, no longer blocking anything.

A loose board creaked somewhere above.
