English 원문
From the dry plank that bridged two sandbars, Ivy observed a lone figure crouching among silver puddles, pinching wet sand into curling ridges. The morning sun angled low, and every ripple reflected a trembling band of glare that flickered across his jacket. She recognized Cole only by the way he balanced a narrow brush between his knuckles while thinking. Nowhere along the exposed flat could she spot the opulent pink ribbon abandoned after her cousin’s wedding, though she knew it lay somewhere nearby. A briny smell seemed to permeate the still air, hinting that the tide had paused only for a momentary breath. Seldom had a simple strip of cloth demanded such haste from her hands while the shore lay otherwise untroubled.
She climbed down, boots squelching, and each step sent concentric shivers across the artist’s fragile ridges. Cole paused, brush hovering, as an envious gull dipped low enough to inspect the new disturbance. He shifted sideways, protecting his pattern, yet mud released by Ivy’s boots began to creep outward, clouding the reflected light he needed. A small crab, moving like a patient henchman, climbed one ridge and scattered the precise grooves with careless claws. Ivy halted, one boot lifted midair, suddenly unsure whether reclaiming the ribbon warranted ruining someone else’s quiet creation. Hardly had the heel touched down when the nearest ridge collapsed under a sheet of spilling water.
Cole knelt beside the expanding puddle, fingers tracing possibilities in the muddied shine, while Ivy bent to locate the ribbon beneath the surface haze. Only by joining forces, he indicated with a brief nod, could they rescue both his pattern and her keepsake before the tide returned. She slid her arm into the pool, pushing mud aside, while he gathered sunlight with a small mirror, lifting glare away from her eyes. Yet every scoop she cleared unveiled new silt that flowed downstream and dulled the mirror’s line, so he redirected the beam toward a fresher angle. The arrangement became a rhythm—scoop, tilt, wait—until the ribbon appeared, its opulent threads twitching like a small fish caught under glassy film. Scarcely had Ivy lifted it free when a gust crossed the flat, springing wavelets that erased the remaining ridges beyond repair.
Her hands still coated with silt, she wound the dripping ribbon around her wrist, the dye staining a faint coral spiral on her skin. Cole studied the ruined sculpture of sand, then pressed his mirror flat against the water, forcing a broad sheet of reflected light toward a bare stretch farther upslope. If the waves were kinder, the new space might survive a few minutes, yet he started shaping immediately, shoulders squared against the glare. Ivy lingered, shifting weight from heel to toe, before stepping back toward the boardwalk where her footprints merged with earlier ones and slowly vanished. Behind her, a late slice of sunlight skimmed the shallow pools, turning the last shard of his mirror into a trembling star on wet sand.
