Every dawn, Tara unlocked the weather-station hut; today the latch resisted under a thin crust of salt, and a raw, iron scent slipped out as the door swung inward. Seldom had the hut smelled so strongly of damp wax and sweet rot. On the narrow table a dusty brass candelabra had slumped—one arm bent as though losing its dignity overnight. The pooled wax around its base held fine ridges, as if miniature waves had frozen mid-ripple. Tara rubbed her sleeve across the glass of the barometer, numbers blurred by last night’s mist, then opened the log book. Her gloves folded, she returned to the hut. The odor inside had thickened, iron edging into must. Hardly had she crossed the threshold when a drop of translucent wax detached from the candelabra and landed with a soft tick beside the earlier ripples. A pattern surfaced: each drip lined the same northeast arc marked on yesterday’s wind-direction chart. What stopped her was the slow realization that the melted arms had always leaned that way; only the missing spin of the anemometer allowed her to see it. The hut’s air, carrying a note like quiet anxiety, pressed closer as she bent to compare wax and numbers.

She straightened, slipped the chisel into her pocket, and pushed the door wide so daylight touched the wavering wax. Rarely were the instruments still enough for such silent cartography. Tara closed the log book without writing more, then walked back toward the yard. The spider web sagged; a faint wind had returned, trimming its own artwork. She raised a hand to the vane yet drew back, choosing instead to lift the fallen chalk from under a tuft of grass and set it on the table inside.
