English 원문
“Who carved this spiral?” Felix knelt where a thin groove curled across the frozen lake. The ice hummed beneath his boots, low notes rising and fading like breath inside a vast instrument. Powdery snow ringed the mark, suggesting it had formed after the last gust brushed the surface. He followed the line with a mitten, noting how it tightened toward the center before slipping under a cloudy crust. Farther out, a lumbering rumble rolled beneath the glaze, and a sharper creak replied behind him near the reed edge. Each sound nested inside the last, as though the lake kept adding layers to a question he had yet to decipher.
He rose and walked along the groove, adopting a cautious approach that placed each heel softly before letting full weight follow. Nowhere along the bright sheet could he find a second mark, yet faint clicks of trapped bubbles enlarged his sense of company. Seldom had he noticed how the ice composed its own rhythm: distant thunder, nearer moans, then silence that magnified every breath. The spiral broadened ahead, revealing thin ridges where crystallised water rose and fell in miniature terraces like a frozen amphitheater. Glove removed, he brushed one ridge; the ice answered with a mellow ping, and a tiny flake spun away in a smooth arc. The shape no longer resembled a careless skate mark; instead, it hinted at something built slowly, perhaps as sustainable as the season itself.
He paused where the groove suddenly deepened, the air above tremoring with a fresh bass note that seemed to crawl through his legs. Hardly had the vibration faded when a narrow plume of water lifted within the spiral, froze mid-swirl, and locked in a glassy twist. What startled him was the way the plume revealed the groove as a vent where liquid breathed through thinning ice. A lumbering current pressed beneath the crust, pushing upward in patient circles, engraving its path rather than breaking free at once. He considered sliding farther out, then angled back toward shore, choosing instead to trace the vent's rim with the tip of his boot. Each gentle sweep widened the ring, and more plumes blinked out like tiny geysers, offering sound rather than spray to the still afternoon.
Only when the ring reached the width of his backpack did he stop, breathing white curls that drifted sideways in the quiet wind. Peace hung over the newly drawn circle, yet soft notes continued to rise through its center, more musical than before and strangely regular. He knelt again, this time laying his ear flat, listening for pattern rather than volume, willing the lake to share whatever story it rehearsed. Cautious though he remained, the discovery sat lighter now, more like dialogue between surface and depth than a warning. Felix pressed his palm against the ice once more, marking the pulse beneath with the steadiness of his own heartbeat.
