English 원문
The hemp cord above the indigo vat sagged lower than yesterday; whose hands had loosened the knot overnight? Nadia paused at the doorway, charcoal smoke mixing with the familiar alkaline bite that settled on her tongue. This room, once mapped in her muscles, offered no greeting beyond that sharp preamble of fermented-leaf smell and faint iron. Racks leaned over the sunken basin, cloth shimmering between green and deep marine as air coaxed the hidden blue. Rarely had the vat surface looked so still, a polished slab of night refusing all hints of motion. She raised one plank beside the rim and touched it; cold moisture beaded on her skin, staining the creases. Somewhere a slow drip echoed across the rafters, answering nothing she yet asked of the silent dye room.
She ducked through the low underpass formed by two stacked drying frames, sleeves brushing powdery lint. The morning regimen usually began with a ladle clanging against the rim, yet today the ladle lay missing, leaving only a circle of lighter dust on the bench. It was the faint drizzle of dye on the flagstones that drew her closer, each droplet ringed by turquoise halos. Cloth nearby hung unevenly, edges stiff where dye had crusted, a silent report of hurried hands. Her palm hovered, then pulled back; dye wetness could bloom across skin in seconds, and she needed clean grip for the search. Above, wind rattled thin slats between roof beams, but the vat remained unmoved, withholding its story.
On the shelf beyond the furnace, several small spheres of beeswax now sat cracked and slightly flattened. Each once held a pinch of lime, their neat encapsulation intended to burst only under water. Two were already split, pale dust smeared in a wavering line along the counter edge. Nadia knelt, tracing the faint powder trail that snaked from shelf corner toward the vat. Were the spheres tossed early, the mixture would sour, yet the color on nearby cloth shone pure. She slowed, reconsidering her first suspicion while the dull scrape of her boot met the stone. Perhaps an apprentice had tried to sow the seeds of a quicker blue, mistiming the drops. A strange sweetness rose from the vat now, softening the usual ammonia tang and layering it with something like overripe figs. Breath held, she dipped a corner of plain cotton, lifted it after a silent count, and watched the hidden yellow meet the air, turning teal, then navy.
She retraced her steps to the doorway, the sagging cord once more at eye level. Thumbmark gleaming, the late sunlight froze on it for a quiet heartbeat before sliding away. Light from the courtyard slid under the lintel, touching the blue print on the threshold — shallow yet unmistakable, right where she had stepped without looking earlier. It had always been there, pressed perhaps days ago, but only now did its shape echo the broken wax spheres and missing ladle. The scent of figs lingered behind her in the shadowed doorway as she finally stepped outside. The wind lifted one loose thread from her cuff, letting it dance against the white wall before settling.
