The Clang Beneath the Crust-

English 원문
Opal stepped over the low timber rail, sandals crunching on the brittle crust that ringed the nearest pool. Each stride took her deeper between mirrored sheets of brine; the hiss of windless air floated above the water, and a distant gull offered a single, rasping call. Rarely had the pans sounded so alive. She paused at a rake propped against a post, lifted it, and let the teeth tap the wooden lip—three hollow knocks that echoed back from the stone storehouse beyond.
Inside that storehouse, silence resumed its rule. Rows of shallow trays lined the benches, every tray holding a different experiment that she, acting as informal curator, tended. Petals from an early-season blossom lay beneath a lace of salt so fine it shivered when she breathed. She kept an eye on the corner gauge where a black thread marked air humidity; too much moisture and the petals would sag, too little and they might splinter. Self-discovery drifted between the beams like dust: each crystal revealed what the water had carried but never declared aloud.
Back outside, she set the rake’s tines on the newest crust. The surface resisted, the salt already knitting itself into a stubborn plate. Her sleeve damp with spray, she pressed harder; the crust lifted only a handspan before a deep metallic clang burst from the sluice gate at the canal’s edge. It was the sudden clang of iron that unsettled the smooth crust, sending a crack skittering away under her boots. Opal shifted weight, slid the rake handle beneath the plate, and levered it free; brine gurgled into the gap, then stilled. For a moment she stood, one hand on the rake, listening to the echo fade toward the sea wall, then she gathered the fractured slabs into a waiting wicker basket.
She carried the load to the storehouse threshold, set it beside the blossom trays, and walked toward the shade of the fig trees beyond the salt field. The basket remained, white shards piled unevenly against the wicker; beneath the lowest shard, fine crystals continued to grow along the splintered edge, their faint ticking the only sound inside the room.
