English 원문
The first sound came as a single ping, like a fork tapped against glass, and it lingered in the repair shop’s hush. Tara lifted her head; shelves of clocks answered with uneven ticks while a loose floorboard muttered under distant footsteps. On the bench waited a terracotta music box shaped as a tiny carousel, its dome lacquer flaked by years of handling. Slow maturation in a humid attic had darkened the clay from pale peach to deep ember. Somewhere beneath the chipped lid a spring rattled, a fault every rotation amplified. She steadied the piece against a felt pad, choosing a slender sculpting tool over the usual screwdriver because the groove circling the lid allowed only the thinnest blade. Around her, the lamp’s filament hummed, knitting the scattered noises into a faint, pulsing chord.
Hardly had she nudged the blade under the groove when three brass screws leapt free, ricocheting across the bench with bright, insect-like clicks. One skidded over the polished edge, clattered onto the linoleum, and spun beneath a shelf stacked with plush toys waiting for stitching. Tara crouched; the narrow space trapped the echo of her own breathing, and in that pocket of stillness the shop door chimed. Ian stepped inside, rain beading on his jacket, palms cradling the empty spot where his rabbit belonged. He stooped as well, their shoulders almost touching, and his quiet question overlapped the slow creak of the closing door. The screw kept rolling, tapping a wandering rhythm between cardboard boxes.
She reached beneath the shelf, fingertips grazing dust, yet the screw eluded every sweep. With Ian’s torch phone held low, glints darted over paint flecks and dropped needles until the missing piece finally revealed itself lodged against a spool of thread. The moment she pinched it free, the carousel’s inner spring relaxed without warning; a dull twang rippled through the shop, and a shard of terracotta flaked from the lid, fluttering onto the rabbit’s velvet ear. Tara froze, hand still hovering, the plush now dusted in rusty powder. Were the adhesive any thicker, it would block the gears, she judged, yet brushing the powder risked smearing the fabric. Sound dwindled to the faint hum of the lamp and Ian’s restrained breath.
At last she settled on compromise: cotton from the thread drawer, pressed gently into the hollow lid, might solidify the carousel’s voice without disturbing the wounded clay. Ian winced at the tiny puncture she opened in the rabbit’s seam, then steadied the animal so loose stuffing could drift onto her palm. Together they packed the cotton into the music box, aligned the lid, and wound the key; the carousel turned, muted now to a lull, though a muffled scrape haunted each revolution. He accepted the rabbit, its ear lightly stained, yet his thumb stroked the spot as though smoothing time itself. When the door closed behind him, only the hush remained, broken by the clock that missed a beat before resuming.
