English 원문
The porcelain cup lay on its side atop the white gravel; its thin handle pointed toward the gate, and the curved rim sketched an unintended swirl across the otherwise straight strokes. Nora knelt, lifted the cup, and set it on the low wall. Rarely had the garden sounded so unsettled—tiny stones hissed down the groove her sleeve brushed. She touched the rake; the tines quivered, eager for rhythm, yet she waited.
A garland of pine needles, brown and porous, clung to the moss that framed a hewn log used as a bench. One needle dropped, nudged by still air, and landed exactly where the cup’s rim had spoiled the line. Nora drew the rake lightly, correcting the scar, then spotted another irregularity: a shallow dent behind the central stone. The dent itself meant little, yet with cup and garland it formed a pattern that pressed at her thoughts.
She crossed the gravel, ankles grazing the ridges as though wading through the waters the garden only suggested. Half-way, she paused; her foot sank a grain deeper than expected. What caught her off guard was a faint shiver underfoot, no larger than a breath. Her shadow lengthening, she lifted the rake again, angling the tines lower. The slower stroke revealed a buried twig, invisible until friction raised it. Were the channel slightly wider, the twig would have slipped through unnoticed; instead, it stalled the rake and forced Nora to tinker with ideas of curve, resistance, and speed. She altered her stance, guiding each pull in shorter pulses until the gravel settled without collapse.
The afternoon light cooled. Nora stepped back, letting silence elevate the occasion more than any spoken praise could. The cup, now upright on the wall, caught a glint and flashed briefly, but its misplacement no longer dominated the view. The pine needles still formed their quiet loop, yet the groove beneath them flowed cleanly, and the central stone appeared to float. She folded her rake against the log. From the gate a new leaf drifted, hovered, and settled exactly where the cup had first marred the surface; fine dust rose, then fell in slow spirals—an echo soft enough to keep her standing there, listening to the lines hold their shape.
