The Hedgehog That Shimmered-

English 원문
The sharp tang of wet iron clung to the fog, sliding into Iris’s nostrils before any tree or fence showed its outline. A hedgehog, bristled and bronze like a seed pod, trundled across her bootlaces, the dew on its spines catching what little light the fog allowed. Seldom had she met a creature so near that the vapor on its quills glittered like beads. She kept still; the ground exhaled sweet rot from mashed stems, layers of smell stacking above the iron note. The hedgehog paused, nose twitching, stirring a thread of resin that drifted from unseen pines. Silence settled between girl and animal, companionable rather than tense, while the meadow remained borderless behind curtains of white.
Droplets condensed and rolled from the creature’s quills, gathering along the soil until buoyancy lifted a puddle’s skin into tremulous rings. Iris crouched; her knees damp from the grass, she traced one circle with a gloved finger, watching it break and evaporate in the cool breath of the field. Each new smell announced itself: char from a distant hearth, earth thick as clay, a surprising vein of brine as if hidden salt blocks lived below the turf. The hedgehog nosed a lump of moss, sneezed, and produced a chirp so small it sounded mechanical. Her first urge pushed her nearer, yet the fog thickened, softening edges, and she stopped, her outline already dissolving into the whiteness.
A second shape surfaced, scarcely two strides away: another hedgehog, smaller, carrying a wilted violet petal on its spines like a flag. What stopped her was the combined pattern—two, then three, then five—emerging until a loose procession crossed the clearing, their routes weaving yet never colliding. The sight carried an odd camaraderie, each animal brushing the next with an affectionate bump before choosing fresh ground. As though the meadow were organizing a covert parade, the creatures aligned, sniffed, and rotated, their tiny bodies compass needles answering directions she could not read. Hesitation gripped her stance; she shifted weight, considered following, and finally remained at the puddle’s edge, letting the living braid continue untroubled.
Minutes gathered like the fog itself, and the meadow rearranged fragrances once more: resin withdrew, replaced by cold grass and faint oil from her lantern case. Iris opened a small tin, crumbs of dried apple inside, and set it on a flat stone. One hedgehog broke formation, scuttled back, and snuffled along the metal rim; the others drifted after it in loose commas. With her palm open, she waited until the first creature nudged her glove, then she laid the remaining crumbs near its paws. Fog thickened again, seeming to fold the scene inward. She lifted the empty tin, tapped moisture from its base, and slipped it into her pocket.
