English 원문
From the doorway Felix watched the hull dominate the covered slipway, its ribs arching upward while ropes twitched against idle pulleys; the place once rang like a bell-tower, yet only a hush drifted now, broken by a gull’s cranky cry. Between his boots and the keel, wood shavings lay in a loose huddle, their curls overlapping like pale noodles; farther out, a quartet of gulls pecked at a coil of hemp, their wings beating a staccato rhythm that never quite filled the acoustic gap left by silent tools. Even so, the shed’s own ecosystem murmured—brine beneath the planks, resin in the warm air, and the faint creak of timbers warming in sunlight.
He stepped inside, the boards flexing with a hollow thump, and the new quiet deepened. Hardly had he crossed the first cradle when he noticed a mallet resting on a rib instead of the bench where it always waited; sawdust clung to its head as though yesterday’s strike still hovered around it. Next to the cradle leaned a spare aspen spar, its pale grain streaked by grease that had not been there before. Felix reached toward the mallet, paused, then drew his hand back, knuckles brushing the hull instead—its surface cool on the shaded side, warm where the afternoon beam slipped through a roof seam.
His boots still damp from the tide, he followed a faint trail of fresh shavings toward the stern, each step releasing tiny echoes. Were the plank beside him any looser, it would likely rattle, yet everything remained fixed, as if waiting for a signal never given. Below the slipway, water teeming with tiny crabs lapped in a slow rhythm; the sound slipped through gaps between blocks and rebounded inside the unfinished vessel, amplifying absence more than presence. Beneath a newly seated plank he spotted three treenails set flush, a fourth only half-driven—its ring of pale oak exposed. The half-note in that quartet of strikes had always been there, merely buried under louder labor; now it stood out, raw and deliberate, like a held breath.
Felix straightened, letting his palm rest flat against the keel until the wood’s muted heartbeat carried through his wrist. He lifted the mallet, balanced it for a moment, then set it back exactly where he had found it, handle aligned with the grain that ran like quiet water along the rib. Outside, the gulls shuffled and one rope slapped the mast of a nearby hull; he walked toward the light, the lingering echo of his footsteps folding into the wider hush of the yard.
