English 원문
Vera pushed the cedar door inward and stepped across the cool threshold of the lacquer workshop she thought she could navigate blindfolded. Damp warmth slipped around her wrists the moment the door closed, and the air carried the familiar resin bite she used to greet every morning. She walked between tall racks, noting how the curing cabinet’s brass hinges had deepened to a darker green, while a thin bloom of white mineral settlement ringed the clay water tray at its base. Through the single north window a harsh noon glare struck the waiting bowl on the turning stand, and the polished surface answered with a faint amber glow that seemed to catch part of the distant plaza outside.
Brushes laid out in tidy rows once told Vera everything was in order; today one handle sat slightly askew, and that fraction of disorder tugged at her stride. Brush loaded, she drew the first stroke, the lacquer flowing glass-smooth, yet a grotesque ripple spread where the resin met an older layer and refused to level. Hardly had the shimmer settled when her hand paused, hovering above two different cotton pads; she began to weigh options, thumb tapping each in turn while condensation cooled the back of her glove. The silence thickened, broken only by the slow creak of the turning stand and a single bead of water dropping from a cedar slat to the floor.
She tried a finer pad, working with meticulous pressure, but the ripple only shifted, bending the window’s reflection until the plaza stones outside twisted into a warped spiral. The warped image echoed in the lacquer’s depth as though the bowl were breathing, and for the first time the surrounding heat felt unequal—warm on her face, oddly cool along her spine. A second ripple climbed beside the first, subtler yet undeniable, and the two together erased the mirror finish she once trusted. At that moment the bowl’s glow revealed concentric brush marks long buried under earlier coats, marks she must have left seasons ago without seeing.
Lacquer still wet, she set the bowl on the rack, wiped the pad against her sleeve, and turned toward the door. Crossing the threshold again, Vera glanced back; the afternoon light, unchanged, now caught those ancient brush rings and arranged them into quiet spiral maps. Outside, heat rose from the sun-bleached plaza stones, and the pattern there matched the circles inside the workshop bowl, their shared warmth pulsing against the dry street as she let the door ease shut behind her.
