Every evening brought the same circuit: Luke walked the bumper-car floor’s glossy perimeter, counting shells, tapping each rubber ring, and eyeing the ceiling grid that flashed like quicksilver lightning. Tonight the checklist—so familiar it felt like a ritual—paused when a faint metallic gleam streaked the metal beside the red car. Seldom had the overhead sparks lingered long enough to reveal dust on that mirror-bright surface, yet there it lay, a thin silver line curving toward the service gate.
That afternoon, several blocks away, Luke had drifted along the sea-front boulevard where arcade music bled into traffic noise. Neon spilled onto the windows of a narrow ice-cream parlor; its glass counter shimmered with scoops the color of fireworks. Behind the counter, a shelf door hung ajar, showing a cramped pantry stacked with tins of glitter meant for festival sundaes. A draft from the open doorway nudged a tin, a soft clink lost beneath the jukebox bass. Luke blinked at the wobble, then stepped aside as a child darted past; the tin settled, apparently stable.
His sleeve brushing the steering pole, he crouched and followed the silver trace now snaking between two parked cars. A cupboard at the arena’s corner—rarely opened except for mops—stood half-latched. It was the routine itself that hid the sparkle, for the cupboard’s paint matched the floor so closely he usually passed without a glance. Were the lid still sealed, the trail would have ended in darkness, yet the door gaped just enough to spill a fan of shining powder onto the tiles. He hesitated, fingertips hovering above the stuff, then eased the handle fully open. Inside rested the same festival tin, lid dented, contents leaking through a warped seam; the scent of sweetened syrup clung faintly to its rim.
Luke slid the cupboard shut, rolled the red car back to cover the brightest spill, and killed the arena lights. Behind him, speakers faded, and sparks on the grid cooled to dull charcoal. The doors clicked together as he stepped outside, disappearing into the sodium glow beyond the gate. Inside, the shuttered cars waited in rows, their chrome trims holding a muted reflection of scattered silver dust; even in the sudden darkness, those grains kept catching stray light, tiny constellations pinned to the floor.
