English 원문
Every Saturday since early spring Joel had followed Grant along the meadow path to the hives, their boots darkening the same strip of grass. Clover lay blooming in loose carpets, and the hum ahead blended with distant traffic near the civic center. Today, however, the smoker’s bulbous bellows rested on its side instead of standing upright. Grant righted it, Joel eased the pine lid open, and warm sound unfurled from the box as bees poured past the entrance in slow, even arcs.
Hardly had Joel lifted the nearest frame when a faint tremor rippled through the wax, as though the comb were a sail catching a light gust. Sunlight struck the open cells; each suspended drop shone like a tiny jewel. Turning the wood under closer scrutiny, he noticed fine scratches scoring the grain. They multiplied toward the middle, puzzling him. The hive stood far from careless hands, yet the marks converged where the surface swelled in a gentle curve he had always dismissed as ordinary warp.
He paused, shifting one boot on the bench rail, then slid a bare fingertip along the swelling. Were the comb entirely new, the rim would gleam pale; instead, old varnish dulled its edge, and the scratches carried flecks of propolis. The reason the frame weighed differently lay in that gradual thickening: bees had packed wax over a crack he had sanded months earlier, layer upon layer, until the once-straight bar bowed. Grant leaned closer, but Joel, glove back on, rotated the frame again. The curve mirrored the arch of the hive entrance—a geometry present since the first day, simply unnoticed.
Frame replaced and smoker silent, they closed the lid. Grant stacked empty supers nearby while Joel stepped back, veil adjusting against his shoulders. A breeze slipped across the meadow; entrance bees shifted position, wings thrumming faster, airflow pulsing against the timber lip. On the bench, the lifted frame rested askew: propolis smudged around the fresh curve, droplets within the blooming cells deepening to amber. Scratches on the pine ran in thin, converging lines toward the swelling, mapping silent labor in daylight.
