English 원문
Greta hauled upward on the iron handle already halfway clear of its slot; droplets jumped, and one landed on her lip with a bright, briny taste. Seldom had the water tasted so vivid, almost like bitten brass, and the certainty settled her grip. The gate groaned, wood swollen by weeks of sun, yet it rose another finger-width. Down-channel, reeds swayed in the cooler air, their rhythm echoing the confidence in her arms.
Handle still wet, she wedged a short cedar pole beneath the plank for leverage. If the flow were stronger, the narrow weir would overflow, so she counted heartbeats before leaning. The pole flexed, fibers cracking, but the gate inched higher. A second bead of spray reached her tongue—this one duller, carrying clay’s chalky aftertaste—and she frowned, pushing harder. What made her pause was the sudden thinning of the stream beside her boots; scarcity announced itself not with sound but with a trace of dryness on her palate.
A frog, uninvited judge of her work, hopped onto the newly exposed stone and stared. The air now tasted of stale iron, as though the channel’s own narrative complained about being changed. Greta bent, scanning the water line that should have climbed; instead, a side fissure had opened behind the gate, letting half the current escape under the wall. Her plan to transform the field beyond was slipping away in secret rivulets. She drew the pole back, paused, touched the edge with her thumb, then, in an act of wordless introspection, set the tool down and listened to the muted hiss beneath the stone.
She could jam the pole deeper, yet the fissure might widen; she could lower the gate, yet the seedlings upstream needed drink. Uncertainty, cool and metallic, pressed against her teeth. Slowly, she lowered the plank until water covered the breach but left a ribbon flowing forward—a compromise traced in liquid silver. The reeds still swayed, though more gently, and the frog slid into the calmer pool without hurry. Greta stepped onto the dry path, cedar pole balanced across her shoulder, tasting earth on the back of her throat and wondering which furrow would darken first while the water murmured on behind her.
