English 원문
The third hook beneath the mailbox panel showed only a pale outline of dust and scratched paint. Hana leaned closer, fingertips hovering where a tagged key had once swung against the metal. The stainless surface caught corridor fluorescents, sending a blue-grey shimmer across her nails. Dust had gathered along the bottom edge, hinting at days of untouched silence. Behind her, the elevator chimed, then closed before anyone stepped out. A thin strap had been riveted beside the panel but now hung loose over peeling paint. Self-discovery did not belong on a weekday errand, yet the mirrored fleck framed one curious eye. Inner peace rarely visited this thoroughfare of echoing shoes and parcel carts. Still, the small shine caught her attention, and she brushed loose grit aside. A hidden corner of steel flashed again when the corridor light flickered.
She fetched a narrow letter opener from her bag and eased the tip into the gap. The plate shifted but refused to slide free; old adhesive clung like damp paper. Hana tried rocking the tool upward, and a dry scrape echoed down the stairwell. Halfway through the motion the opener bent, warning her to pause before metal snapped. She inhaled, then pressed her thumb flat against the cool surface to warm the glue. Heat from skin loosened the bond little by little, and the rectangle lifted with a quiet sigh. Below it lay a tiny washer, the same silver shade as the mailbox frame. She had assumed a key was missing; the hook had simply dropped its spacer over time. Concrete groundwork around the baseboard showed faint rust marks where moisture had crept behind panels.
Light from the landing window reached the washer, turning its edge almost translucent. Hana rotated the disc between finger and thumb, noticing grooves that matched the vacant hook exactly. Paint flakes drifted onto the floor while corridor air murmured against the intercom panel. She stepped back to the box row, lifted her arm, and slid the bright washer back onto the empty hook.
