Zane halted midway through the balcony doorway, fingers clutching the cool steel frame. Rain-water still dripped from the gutter, tapping a quick rhythm on the concrete below and echoing against the stairwell walls. A faint squeak rode the air between each drip, thin yet clear, like chalk scratching glass. On the upper clothesline wire, a small dark shape hung motionless, wings pressed close. The hallway behind him carried scraps of dialogue from neighbours returning groceries, but the steady hum of the lone washing machine under the floor drowned most voices. He took one slow step onto the balcony; the metal railing answered with a dull thrum, and the shape quivered. A brief hesitation paused his breathing, then the squeak returned, sharper, as if warning that even the hum of the machine felt loud.

Several towels had been draped across the top wire earlier, and yesterday’s downpour left them heavy and cold. Zane wanted the striped one for tonight, yet the creature blocked the pulley hook that guided the line. He fetched a folding stool from the corridor; its rubber feet scraped softly while he positioned it near the planter box. Rising onto the stool, he lifted a corner of the towel, trying not to shake the wire. The shape shuffled again, showing a pale throat instead of the leathery skin he expected. The movement reminded him of a sketch he had once copied from a visiting biologist’s field notes: not a bat, but a swift grounded by wet feathers. He whispered nothing, choosing silence over more vibration, and lowered the towel. The swift stayed, eyes glossy, body trembling like a loose guitar string.

Rain restarted, light but steady, drumming on the plastic table left beside the wall. Zane slid his striped towel along the rail and coaxed it into a small arch, forming a dry pocket near the bird. After one final check, he folded the stool and leaned it inside the doorway. He stepped back into the lit corridor, and the renewed rain kept playing its uneven beat on the waiting balcony.

「欄杆上有蝙蝠。」

尚恩停在陽台門口，手緊抓著冰涼的金屬框。雨水仍從排水槽滴落，在混凝土上敲出急促節拍，聲音在樓梯間牆面間回響。每一次滴聲之間，都飄著細微的啾啾，好似粉筆劃過玻璃。上層曬衣線的黑影掛得紋風不動，翅膀貼緊身軀。身後走廊傳來鄰居買菜回家的零碎對話，但樓下那台洗衣機穩定的低鳴幾乎吞掉全部聲音。他慢慢踏上陽台；金屬欄杆回以低沉振動，那黑影隨之顫抖。他屏住呼吸的一瞬，也聽見啾啾變尖，好像連機器的嗡嗡都嫌太吵。

幾條毛巾先前搭在上層衣架，昨夜的傾盆大雨把它們浸得又重又冷。尚恩想拿那條條紋毛巾，卻被小生物擋住了滑輪鉤。他到走廊搬來折凳，橡膠腳落地時發出輕微摩擦聲。他踩上凳子，小心掀起毛巾一角，盡量不晃動鋼線。那黑影再度移動，露出淡色喉部，而不是想像中的皮翼。他想起曾抄過一位生物學家田野筆記裡的素描：那是被雨淋濕、暫時無法飛行的雨燕，不是蝙蝠。他沒有開口，多一次震動都顯得多餘，便重新放下毛巾。雨燕依舊停在原處，眼珠泛光，身體像鬆弦般顫動。

雨勢再起，輕而持續，擊在牆旁塑膠桌面上奏出鼓點。尚恩把條紋毛巾沿欄杆推動，拱成一個乾燥小弧洞，給小鳥擋雨。他最後檢查一次，折好凳子放回門內。轉身走進亮著燈的走廊時，雨聲仍在陽台上自顧敲打不歇。
