English 원문
A bent paperclip, a stack of supermarket flyers, and a brass parcel shelf occupied the dim mailbox corner. Kai crouched, knees brushing the cold tile, to search for a stamped envelope his sister expected. Somewhere in the shuffling of morning deliveries, the envelope had been pushed through a seam at the back. Outside the entrance glass, light precipitation blurred the courtyard, and damp air weighed on his forearms each time he reached into the gap. After several lunges his fingers met only dusty metal, tingling up his shoulders. He paused to contemplate another way before someone arrived and blocked the narrow corridor.
A plastic ruler leaned on the parcel shelf where residents noted delivery numbers; Kai gripped it, the flat edge cool against his palm. First try, he shoved the ruler behind the boxes, hoping to scoop the envelope upward. Friction scraped along aluminum, yet the paper refused to move. His grip tightened, wrist twisting for a different angle; the ruler flexed then sprang clear, clattering onto the floor. The sudden jolt tipped the umbrella stand, and a leftover droplet began to melt into the dusty grout, darkening the spot. A quick shuffle of shoes announced Cora, a neighbor balancing two grocery bags. She stepped sideways to avoid his swinging elbow, a trace of hesitation in her stance, and remained quietly curious.
With a silent thanks, Kai slid one grocery bag under the parcel shelf and used its woven handle as a makeshift wedge. The metal frame shifted a fraction; gravity answered. The envelope slipped forward, and, to his surprise, an old keycard wrapped in faded tape followed. The loophole that had swallowed the mail had kept the card hidden for who knew how long. The envelope landed on Cora’s shoe, corner slightly bent, while the keycard bounced onto the flyers. Kai offered her the envelope; she nodded and tucked it into a pocket. He weighed the scuffed card in his palm, uncertain of its story. Back at the starting place, the bent paperclip that had been dry now lay beside the spreading oval stain.
