Condensation had already clouded Nora’s glasses when she pushed through the automatic doors. She shrugged her silver-striped backpack higher. Then she tugged a numbered slip from the beeping dispenser and joined Jude beside the steel-grey chairs. Their shared goal was simple: send a sketchbook to a cousin abroad. The form, printed in tiny blue lines, waited between their elbows on the blue-grey counter. Nora’s pen scratched across the frost-white surface. A missing postcode meant the clerk slid the sheet back through the gap beneath the glass. The ticket display flipped, so both teenagers drifted to the rear floor mark without complaint.
Perseverance lived in their small routine: new ticket, new attempt, steady breathing under the fluorescent cast. While they waited, Jude began to fiddle around with the pen chain at the form-filling desk. The chrome links swayed like a thin pendulum. A boy ahead of them gave a quick stumble over a peeling floor sticker. The brief scuff of his shoes broke the hush. The gentle sway of the chain became a welcome distraction from the long wait.
When their number glowed again, Nora laid the form on the gritty laminate and pulled a chilled bottle from the backpack. Frost-white beads met the warm room; droplets gathered and dripped onto the fresh ink. The dark strokes bloomed like tiny blue-grey islands, and the clerk returned the smeared sheet. Water slid down the counter slope to the digital scale, where the glowing digits flickered. Jude caught the source, lifted the bottle onto cardboard blanks, and blotted the surface with tissue. The cascade paused, faint moisture remaining. Nora rewrote the address while Jude steadied the parcel, and together they slid the unstained form beneath the glass. A final bead of water rolled along the scale’s edge and descended toward the shadow between counter and wall.
