Air Through Paper-

A humming ticket dispenser, a stack of clipboards, and a flickering digital display occupied the reception counter. Between brief beeps, the screen ticked forward one red number, then paused while plastic chairs squeaked under shifting weight. A loose pen on its chain tapped the form tray whenever someone brushed past. Glen collected a blank insurance sheet, and the vinyl seat sighed as he lowered himself, the cool surface picking up a faint hiss from the air vent below. Paper rustled like distant rain while he traced the pale blueprint lines on the back of a naturalist brochure that came with the form. Somewhere down the hallway, doors thudded and hinges groaned, forming a rough mantra of repetition: open, close, shuffle, hush. The overlapping rhythm held synergy; each sound layered over another until the room vibrated with quiet activity. Glen’s ticket read ninety-two, yet the display blinked at eighty-four.
The ceiling speaker crackled as the display rolled to eighty-nine. Glen half-rose, but a throat-clear from the desk sent him sliding back. When ninety-two finally chimed, he handed over the sheet, yet an unsigned box earned a dull rejection stamp. If he had kept staring at the static numbers, the page would have stayed a failed document. Instead he drifted to a hallway bench, flipped the page, and found a lone popcorn kernel wedged in its crease. Rolling it over glossy paper made a hollow tap that echoed along the linoleum. The beat matched the vent’s steady whistle, so he curled the sheet into a shallow tube and balanced it on the grille. Air threaded through, turning the form into a soft drone pipe. Glen pocketed a fresh ticket and walked toward the form-filling table. The folded sheet quivered against the vent, weaving a faint drone that Glen never heard.
