He had measured every plank twice, but an old wooden wicket lay across the ruler groove, warped and heavier than it looked. Its steel-grey bars, once part of a garden gate, refused to shift; dried glue had been widening the grip where the hinges touched the bench. Quinn gripped both ends, leaned back, and tried to lift. The wicket did not budge, and the new veneer sheet sagged in his other hand like an unfolding story sketched in frost-white grain.

He set the veneer down, unaware that the motion stirred a tray of curled shavings. The ribbons fell and began to twirl across the floor. Their drifting cloud startled a cluster of tiny moths that had been resting behind the drying shelf; the sudden flutter startled the studio’s vigilant cat. The cat sprang upward, paws striking a hanging pair of pliers. Metal swung toward a basket of glue sticks, nudging it off the pegboard hook. If the wicket had been lighter, he would have removed it and dived for the falling basket. Instead, he pivoted the bulky piece onto the veneer, using its stubborn weight as a broad press. The basket landed against the wicket’s frame and stopped short, glue sticks rolling harmlessly into its lattice. A single drop of red sealing wax splattered on the veneer, leaving a tiny exclamation against the pale surface.

The veneer now lay perfectly flat, pinned by the same mass that had blocked his work. Quinn pressed the last edge, then checked that the moths had drifted back toward the rafters and the cat crouched calmly beside the supply corner. A thin metallic sway from the pliers faded, yet cool air carried the soft whirr of retreating wings across the rafters.
