English 원문
The clay mound felt cool and slightly bumpy under Olive’s palms as the wheel murmured beneath her fingertips. Bright afternoon light sliced across the metal disc, throwing a crisp shadow that guided her sliding hands. She and Vera aimed to transform the wobbling lump into a tall cup, but first it had to sit dead center. Olive pressed inward; the rim narrowed, yet a slow tilt survived like a stubborn twig caught in running water. Their first gain erased half the sway, still leaving a visible hurdle: the silhouette wobbled one finger-width each rotation. Vera dipped the sponge, grey water gleaming, and flicked two drops onto the spinning crown to soften the surface.
The added moisture let the clay slide more smoothly, and their thumbs drove the mass a millimeter nearer the center. Still, a faint shadow flickered around the rim, proof that the lump refused to surrender entirely. Vera tapped the foot pedal; the speed rose, and a halo of water was being drawn outward by the disc. Droplets flew past the glare and splashed against the tool jar. They trickled down the jar’s side into a shallow groove in the splash pan. The groove fed a narrow stream toward the pedal zone, where Olive’s slipper already skimmed the back-lit floor. Water reached the sole; the rubber slid, her heel pressed lower, and the wheel jumped to a sudden glare-bright blur. Centrifugal force tore a thin collar off the cup, and wet ribbons slapped against the splash pan. Olive eased the pedal up, recovering full control before the form collapsed. Only a single tilt remained: no wider than the shadow of a twig.
With the speed lowered, Vera braced her elbows and both slid their left palms in a steady inward glide. The remaining wobble shivered once, then vanished; the cylinder now spun as a single grey column without a flicker. Centering achieved, Olive lifted the metal rib, planning to raise the wall taller before the clay’s plasticity faded. A faint glow still bounced off the water film that circled the splash pan, sliding continually toward the drain hole. She kept her foot hovering above the pedal, ready to counter any surge. The wheel kept revolving beneath the glare while the rib hovered a breath above the centered clay.
