Fine grit from a half-used strip of sandpaper rasped against Theo’s fingertips while he smoothed the last cedar petal. A thin film of warmth spread across his palms, and pale dust drifted toward the drying shelf, where broad planks carried the sun-faded streaks of older projects. He had planned three bright plaques: each would hold a marigold carved in relief and a tiny ridge suggesting a winding garden path behind the flower. Fresh clamps still lay open, the timer’s steady beat promised plenty of minutes, and the shelf’s middle rail looked wide enough for everything.

While Theo crossed the room for glue, bodies pressed near the rack. New pieces arrived, bumping one another with a light gossip of wood on wood. The rail no longer looked generous; clamps hung in use, their spare arms gone. He pressed his petal edges together, but the glue refused to glide evenly because the nozzle clogged, costing more seconds. The timer’s hand crept forward. Space tightened; only one plaque could still lie flat. Theo breathed against the sticky cedar, trimmed his plan, and chose the board whose grain caught daylight best. He returned the other blanks to the supply corner, shoulders squared with quiet dignity rather than haste.

Back at the shelf, he eased the chosen plaque into the sole free spot. Older pieces around it bore darker varnish lines—visible proof of mornings already spent here. Theo wiped excess glue before it hardened, then traced the unfinished curve where the garden path would stop earlier than he’d imagined. The timer clicked on without drama, marking what could no longer be changed. He slid the single plaque onto the centre rail and stepped back as the glue thickened to a dull skin.
