Sun-heated concrete left a faint roughness on Sage’s fingertips as she crouched beside the cast tiger paw along the zoo’s animal-footprint trail. Parts of the pattern had already been dulled by countless shoes, so she and Blake wanted a clear impression before visitors gathered. Their single ribbon of pliable beeswax felt warm and sticky in the afternoon light. An empty butterfly chrysalis clung to a low branch above them, its shell translucent after the insect’s recent metamorphosis. The grooves in the concrete were shallow; each time Sage lifted the wax, edges curled back. Blake slipped a thin aluminium handle from his sketch roll—the versatile tube acted like a miniature rolling pin. With steady passes he built gentle momentum, pressing the wax into every claw tip. When the strip peeled free, a sharp tiger print gleamed in the wax, though Sage noticed the material had thinned where the claws were deepest.
A few steps farther, the trail offered a wide frog footprint. Before they arrived, a school group filled the spot and stalled their progress; the reptile house door would reopen soon, so time shrank. Sage inspected the wax: its centre was now paper-thin. Securing the tiger cast had harmed the next task. A stiff magnolia leaf lay near the curb, its ribbed surface surprisingly unbroken—a rare find after last night’s rain. She slipped the leaf beneath the wax, folded one corner over, and used Blake’s aluminium handle to press the sandwich into the webbed shape. As the handle rotated, an epiphany about borrowing strength from ordinary things surfaced, though the work was already under way. The veins supported the softened sheet, yet their pattern rippled across both impressions. The tiger claws now carried faint leaf ridges, and the frog pads showed blurred edges, but each print remained readable. Footsteps drifted, and the warm scent of sunlit hay stayed in the still air.
