Hazel had hoped to keep the arcs continuous, yet the soaked string stretched, lowering the bottle until its cap scraped the sheet and left a thick skid. She watched the paint and water interact through the translucent plastic, then tried to tie an extra knot to shorten the line. If the string had been dry, her first knot would have held; instead it slipped open, and a fresh blot spread where the pendulum stalled.

A faint tremor shook the frame when the front stick began to sink into the soft ground. The tilt sent the next swing off course, and the blue and green trails started to diverge in messy loops. One heavy drop spattered beyond the border; a thin groove had been sliced along the paper by the dragging cap. Hector braced the leg, but his hands slid on the smooth wood. While he searched for a stone, Hazel noticed how much spare length the stretched string offered. She lifted the bottle, looped the loosened strand once around the cross-lashing higher on the tripod, and let go. The same elasticity that had spoiled the height now pulled the bottle upward, clearing the sheet by two finger widths and guiding it back into a centred arc.

With the pendulum restored, Seth slid a flat rock under the sinking leg, slowing the lean before more weight could shift. Colour flowed again in widening circles, the earlier blot now part of a thicker ring. Hazel stepped back to watch; her shoes pressed new crescents into the grass beside the drying paper. At the edge of the sheet, a ladybug crawled onto a fresh line of turquoise and drifted along the moving pendulum’s shadow, its tiny wings opening and closing while it inched toward the untouched corner.
