She pressed a half-filled blue balloon against the chair back; the cool, stretchy surface clung to her palm while static lifted one hair. Eight steady pushes on the silver pump had left the latex round and smooth, promising endless possibilities for the cluster waiting near the ceiling corner. Their morning excursion to the party shop had stuffed the bag under the table with colours. Air still hissed at the nozzle, so she pinched the neck, reached for the ribbon, and saw the roll dip, drop, and unravel across the floor. She crouched, carpet fibers brushing her knees, and tried a quick exchange: loop under, over, under. A tight knot locked itself where two coils crossed and held the balloon captive beside her ankle.

Basil, her companion, had been taping balloons to the ceiling; several red ones had been arranged into tidy pairs above the window. Pearl tugged the tangled spot; the ribbon’s surface felt waxy, so she eased one finger between strands instead of pulling straight. The knot loosened, yet the sudden slack let the balloon jerk upward. Its neck slipped from her grip, and a rush of air shot toward the table. That slow stream brushed a trio of balloons; they drifted sideways, bumped the streamer wall, and peeled a strip of tape. The streamer drooped, brushed Pearl’s shoulder, then slid toward the draft drifting from the kitchen doorway. She caught the loose end, the paper feeling crisp and light, and pressed it flat while Basil smoothed fresh tape over the crease. Behind them, the half-emptied blue balloon rolled across the floorboards, its neck fluttering and tapping tiny arcs toward the sofa.
