English 원문
Five faint chimes had faded from the kitchen timer before Suki reached the packaging station, where trays clanged against metal rails and the glass cooler hummed like distant wires. A blue-striped cat lounged on the outdoor bench; its ears twitched each time the oven door thudded shut. In front of Suki lay a handcrafted pastry shaped like larkspur, the sugar petals still crackling as they cooled. She lifted an empty box, its cardboard panels snapping into neat structure, yet the ribbon spool beside it refused to turn. A baffled rattle escaped the plastic housing, then silence returned, broken only by the soft rustle of paper bags further down the queue. If the tight coil loosened, the line would flow again, so she pinched the ribbon with her fingertips and tugged. The spool answered with one sharp squeal, stopped mid-groan, and left the pastry waiting while warmth slipped away with every tick of the cooling fan.
Steam hissed from the prep hatch, overlapping with the distant ring of the cash drawer as Suki tried a subtler grip. She slid a pair of spare tongs from the utensil tub, slipped the curved end into the narrow gap, and angled the handle downward. The metal rod scraped twice, shifted the wooden core, yet the coil stuck once more. She twisted the tongs a few degrees, pressed again, and the ribbon finally spilled off the reel in a quick flutter. Just then the entrance bell clanged; a sparrow burst inside on the rush of cold air, wings drumming against glass before darting back outside, scattering loose loops of ribbon across the counter. Suki gathered the strand, tied a bow whose symmetry leaned left, and closed the lid before the next oven alarm rang. A crimped length of blue ribbon lay curled on the floor beside the empty spool.
