She tilted the soft envelope, and a stream of round brown seeds slid across the bench grain. Her fingertips tried to wade through the rolling beads, but they scattered and mixed with a neighboring open tray. She reached for the heavy magnifying glass, yet the thick lens fogged immediately against the shed’s warm air. Unable to focus, she misjudged one seed and flicked it, sending it bouncing into the oregano pile. Most of the ink had been stripped from the envelope by last summer’s damp air.

She stepped away to stretch her shoulders, soles meeting the cool stone while heat gathered between roof and dusty rafters. A row of drying lavender brushed her hair as she lifted it, their stems stiff yet surprisingly resilient after months without moisture. Crossing to the far hook, she compared fresh seeds against brittle herbs, inhaling aromas that muddled rather than clarified their identity. On her return she paused at a shelf where trays held faded sketches of marine life from old compost lessons. Beside them, an iron harpoon, long ago turned tomato stake, leaned quietly, its barbed tip buried in packed earth for stability. Sorting continued in her absence, the mixed tray trembling whenever she passed, yet she left it untouched to avoid another isolated incident. The earlier spill had been small, yet its escaped seeds seemed to appear under every fingertip she placed.

Back at the bench, a slight heel tap nudged the magnifying glass toward scattered seeds until its rim brushed her wrist. She caught the lens without thinking, kept it low, and this time viewed the grains from the side rather than above. The altered angle revealed tiny swelling on several seeds; moisture had doubled their size, disguising familiar basil shapes as something foreign. With two pinched fingers she rolled one kernel, released a muted peppery scent, and steered the rest into the correct compartment. A robin on the window ledge snapped up a stray basil seed and darted away over the shimmering beds.
