A thin crease had deepened across the customs form during the twenty minutes Esme spent in the queue. The gritty laminate of the side table rasped against her elbow. She copied the final line with the chained pen, cool and slippery beneath her fingers. She tucked the small parcel—wrapped earlier at home—under her forearm and advanced to the scale. The cardboard felt warm-to-touch after lying near a heater, but intuition told her it weighed too much. Seconds later the display confirmed it: bright numbers glowed above the strict limit. The parcel had been weighed twice before the clerk pointed at the red digits. Esme clutched a fresh queue ticket and eased a travel booklet out of the box to lighten it.
A sudden draft burst through the entrance when someone pushed the glass door; forms sprayed across the tiles like dry leaves. The clerk called another number, and instinctively Esme bent to help gather the damp sheets, their corners rough with dust. As she crossed the waiting area, the overhead ticket screen began to flicker; her number vanished from the list. When the last form lay on the desk, the parcel still sat open, and the earlier warmth had faded. The glue strip along the flap had cooled, and the orchid sticker now curled upward at one edge.
She tipped the box, allowing the travel booklet to slide beneath a layer of crumpled paper instead of sitting near the lid. The shift pressed the contents lower, and her shoulders lowered while the cardboard flexed under steady pressure from both hands. Before offering the parcel, she did inquire about the vanished number, yet the clerk simply shrugged and indicated the free window. Esme returned to the counter window; the scale plate felt cold against her knuckles when she nudged the parcel into place. The digits held steady below the limit, so the clerk stamped the label, the rubber pad leaving a firm mark. A faint smell of fresh ink remained above the counter.
