Sam pressed the straightedge against the birch sheet and dragged a chalk line across the worktable. The expanse of pale wood flexed slightly under his forearm, its grain pushing back with quiet springiness. He aimed to carve interlocking shelves, and the first board already lay in the vice with two neat cuts. A fine sawdust ribbon gathered along the ruler groove, forming a shallow ridge that blurred the mark he needed. He brushed once with his palm; the powder clung, leaving a faint smear that created a small dilemma. Before he could fetch fresh chalk, the studio’s door creaked as the instructor strode past, demonstrating a gentle saw stroke.
The faint timer on the drying shelf suddenly rang, its quick metallic note slicing through the steady rasp of tools. Sam straightened, shoulders tight, and crossed the room to silence it, aware the glue on another student’s frame might overflow. He had returned the knob to zero when a second sound arrived: a sharp bang as the yard door swung open. A cold gust rushed inside, sweeping a pale cloud of sawdust across benches and burying his careful chalk guides beneath grit. Sam hurried back; the board waited, but the once-clear lines now lay conflicted, crossing each other at strange, uneven angles. He had planned each joint, yet the surface had been covered too thickly to reveal exactly where the cuts belonged.
Lena, working at the pegboard, stepped beside him and tipped the board, letting loose dust slide away under gentle taps. Even so, the chalk remained hidden, so they measured again; Sam steadied the straightedge while Lena traced fresh marks. The grain pattern suggested a narrower shelf than planned, and that solved the dilemma: they shortened the design together. Sam’s wrist rolled, guiding the saw slowly; Lena braced the far end so the board stayed firm against gravity’s pull. Each tooth bite produced a soft vibration through their arms, and wood fibres parted cleanly instead of crumbling under hurried pressure. By evening, amber light slanted across the empty worktable; the shortened shelf blank lay drying upright, faint sawdust still clinging. The timer ticked on, counting seconds nobody heard, while a thin stripe of dust stayed unmoved under the silent vice.
